on ice

Published by pennyraine at 5:17 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

I hear that half the state of Arkansas is on ice. Or rather under ice. I have been there and done that. I doubt few folks from Arkansas are reading right now but I will offer pointers anyway. When we experienced our first “knock the power out for a week” ice storm we were slightly prepared. Now we are pros. First thing you need is an alternate heat source. Preferably wood. When the power goes out the gas pumps don’t work and you can’t get kerosene, and one 5 gal jug will last about 10-20 hours depending on how you run the heater. And don’t forget matches. Second nesessity is stored water. Probably 5 gal per person per day, for drinking, cooking, and light bathing. Use blankets and closed doors to close off all unused areas of the house away from heat source. Try to use just one room, slumber parties are fun.

more tomorrow.
